The Lost History of Cuban-Chinese Cuisine

A fascinating blend of Chinese and Cuban cuisine emerged in Cuba during the late 19th century with the arrival of Chinese immigrants on sugarcane plantations. The popularity of Cuban-Chinese cuisine spread beyond the Chinese community and was embraced by all Cubans. These restaurants became an integral part of Cuban culture, offering a unique culinary experience that blends the best of both worlds.

While historical events dispersed the Cuban-Chinese culture, the cuisine found a home in the exiled communities of Southern Florida and Northern New Jersey, where in the 1970’s and 80’s Chino-Cubano restaurants were some of the most popular. Inspired by this history, we aim to bring back the essence of, but also reinterpret, Chino-Cubano cuisine!

Join us on Chino-Cubano Tuesdays at La Isla to celebrate this delightful culinary fusion and be part of this culinary adventure to rediscover the lost flavors of Chino-Cubano cuisine with a sense of heritage, innovation and fun!
